Work experience

Do you want to learn more about what a career in civil engineering is about? Our work experience week has been designed to give school pupils an insight into all aspects of the construction sector and the many different career paths it can offer.

We aim to give young people a chance to see for themselves which opportunities exist for them while providing a safe and supportive environment. Participants will be able to hear first hand from our teams what it is like to work at Jones Bros and how their careers have developed with us.

Taking place at our head office in North East Wales, participants will take part in a carefully structured programme of activities and site visits.

Here is an example of a typical week’s timetable:

Monday:

• Induction and introduction
• Presentation from a head office department e.g. bidding or commercial team

Tuesday:

• Construction activities at the training centre including bridge building
• Health and safety awareness.

Wednesday:

• Visit to a construction site including a site tour and presentation from site management team

Thursday:

• Presentation from head office team e.g. health and safety, environment or finance
• Group project and prepare for presentation

Friday:

• Conclude group project and presentation
• Wrap up the week

We are looking for participants who have an interest in project based and head office careers with the following:

• Enthusiasm for learning and taking part
• An interest in construction and civil engineering and how things are built
• Skills in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) subjects
• Self motivation and initiative.

Previous participants have found that attending our work experience week has helped them make the right decisions when choosing whether to stay at school to complete A-Levels, subjects or college courses. It has also helped them decide whether a career in construction is for them. Some participants have gone on to join our apprenticeship schemes and become full time members of our team.
